Fresh out of university in 2016 and eager to get field experience, I was offered an opportunity to work in South Africa for 6 months managing a marine conservation/research laboratory. What I discovered was a city with immeasurable beauty and diversity of culture & experiences. I was on the water 3-5 times a week whale watching, surveying and diving with sharks, and deploying research equipment in kelp forests. Every weekend I was hiking, driving through winding coastal roads and over mountain peaks, and exploring new corners of Cape Town’s vibrant and exciting culture.
